Frequently Asked Questions
You may have questions about what happens during a session or what payments may be accepted. If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact us with the form below.
What happens in the first appointment?
Generally, you will meet with a licensed counselor or therapist regularly for about 45-50 minutes to discuss your concerns with your counselor. The goal of this counseling is to learn about your habits and patterns of feelings and behaviors that are related to some of your concerns. Your goal will be to learn new habits and patterns which can be healthier. Counseling provides a special setting in which we can learn about ourselves
What happens in counseling session?
Initially, during your first session, you will discuss your concerns and provide some historical information about what brought you into counseling. You would have an opportunity to meet with your therapist regularly for about 50-60 minutes each week. Counseling is a collaborative effort between the counselor and the client. Your therapist will help you identify goals and potential solutions and a plan for problems that cause emotional turmoil; resolve your inner conflict(s), seek to improve communication and coping skills; strengthen self-esteem; and promote behavior change and optimal mental health. Through counseling, you are able to examine the behaviors, thoughts, and feelings that are causing difficulties in your life. You learn effective ways to deal with your problems by building upon personal strengths and learning ways to encourage personal growth and foster your interest and welfare. It is not unusual for people to feel nervous or uncomfortable at first, but this usually dissipates as your counselor helps you talk about your concerns and your needs. Feel free to bring any questions, concerns, or notes
Why do couples go to couples counseling?
Relationships can be the most important and satisfying part of our life, as well as the most challenging part of our life. If you are feeling stuck in your relationship, or if you are not sure about whether your relationship is going to work out but would like to work at things, counseling could be beneficial for you. When inside a relationship, it is sometimes difficult to see why things are not working and how to change them. Many times, it takes an outside perspective to create change and to help shift your perspective—someone who is clinically trained and has experience in this could be beneficial so you can have help in recognizing the patterns that are keeping you stuck and in the same cycles.
How can I get the most out of my counseling sessions?
You can maximize the progress you make in counseling by being actively involved in the work you and your counselor are doing.
Some suggestions include:
- Be on time and try not to miss any of your sessions, consistency is important with counseling and to your goals.
- Between sessions, make time to think about the things you have discussed with your therapist during your session.
- Journaling about topics discussed can be helpful.
- Invest in following through on any homework assignments, readings, or books your counselor has suggested for you.
